Bottom Right

This seventeenth century scene demonstrates Jewish pedlars trading on the war ships, the docks and the establishment of the Plymouth synagogue. As sailors were not allowed off the ships for fear of desertion, trading for the Jewish pedlars took place on the rat infested gun decks with drunken sailors and their woman alongside.

The edge of the painting shows Plymouth today – modern arena, naval base and how this Ashkenazi synagogue has developed and prospered.
